A Lighting Makeover for the Girls #GELighting #CBias

It's going to be a big summer around here.  Tate is moving out of her crib into her big girl bed and with that switch, Lila and Tate are getting a little update in their room: new bedding, moving of furniture, and a few other fun touches.

One thing I've been dying to change is their ceiling fan.  It's the original builder fan and it's awful.  Old and gold.  {And don't even get me started on the popcorn ceilings.}

I've been wanting to update it to something simple, cute, and girly, keeping energy efficiency in mind.

Last week, Tate and I trekked off to Walmart on a fan and light bulb mission.

We looked at all of the GE Energy Smart light bulbs ...

... and the GE Reveal bulbs.  I even pondered switching to LED lighting but I need to do a bit more research on that first.  The final light bulb decision was made once I found a fan {on clearance!} that was perfect for an idea I had.  {You can read about my entire shopping trip in my Google + album.}

I came home with GE Energy Smart bulbs for the new fixture.  The packaging on these light bulbs contains some great information about savings but GE also has a neat energy savings calculator on their website.  The calculator told me that by replacing the three bulbs in my old fan with Energy Smart CFL's, I'd save $19.71 a year and $108 over the life of the bulbs.  Pretty good, huh?  You can calculate the savings for your house too!

Now if I can just get the girls to turn their lights off when they leave the room!

Finding light bulbs was easy but I had a hard time finding just the fixture I wanted for the girls' room.  Texas summers are hot so I definitely wanted a combination fan/light fixture.  I couldn't find what I had in mind so I decided to customize a plain white fan.

I used the new bedding as inspiration and bought and borrowed an assortment of vinyl ...

... then cut flowers in styles that resembled the new bedding and stuck them to the fan blades.

I installed my new light bulbs ...

... and my awesome husband installed the new fan!  Once up, I decided it needed a little something more so I added a pile of polka dots around the flowers.

My little girls love their new fan {and they're now pressuring me to get the rest of the room makeover done!}.  I love the brightness {and whiteness} of the new bulbs and can really notice a difference from the old bulbs.  It's amazing what some good lighting can do to a room!  The mood is cheerier and the new fixture is such a big improvement.  Goodbye, gold!

  3. OH I have the same issue with the ceiling fans! That looks great and you can change it if you want. Jacob has successfully removed the popcorn ceiling above his bunk bed, it's not very even though :). Maybe he could give you some tips :)
